Eleven N.L. co-workers share $500K Daily Grand prize

ST. JOHN’S (N.L.) – Eleven Canadian Tire co-workers from Stephenville, N.L. each took home $45,454 after winning the Daily Grand second prize of $500,000 on the Nov. 15, 2021 draw.

Cathy White, the group’s trustee, first learned about the big win from her daughter, who had checked the tickets earlier that morning. White could barely contain her excitement and knew she had to share the good news with her co-workers immediately.

“I grabbed the walkie-talkie and said, ‘Those who play in our lotto group, we won,’” White said, recalling that almost instantly, the store was buzzing with excitement.

Daily Grand is a national draw game that offers two options for the second prize. Winners can choose to receive $25,000 a year for life or a lump sum of $500,000. The group of co-workers received the lump sum payment.

The co-workers have been playing together for many years and, while five of its members are retired, the group has remained close and continue to play together.

The 11 group members are Cathy White, Jeff Dubois, Ross Etheridge, Karen Conran Slade, Caren Noseworthy, Doris White, Marcella Rogers, Carl Wheeler, Brenda Smith, Clayton White and Shannon Nolan.

“The best part is it takes a burden off of your shoulders to know you’ve got an extra cushion,” Noseworthy said. “We are all one family down at the store, so it’s nice to win this with my co-workers.”

Each of the 11 group members have different plans for their prize money, with a few widespread similarities. Paying off mortgages and completing home renovations was a common theme among the winners, as well as trips to reunite with family members separated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The winning ticket was purchased at Needs Convenience in Kippens, N.L. The retailer will receive a one per cent seller’s prize.
