ST. JOHN’S (N.L.) – It’s common practice in Atlantic Canada to include a Scratch’N Win ticket or two inside greeting cards for special occasions and Father’s Day was no exception for John and Anne Bartlett of St. John’s, N.L. The couple are now $675,000 richer thanks to a Set for Life ticket in John’s card from their daughter.

“I was down to the house where my daughter is to and she left a Father’s Day card for me,” John said. “When I opened it, I saw there was two Set for Life tickets in it and after I handed them to Anne to scratch, she didn’t believe what she saw.”

What Anne saw was three matching symbols and those three little words all Set for Life players dream of uncovering.

“I saw three suns and the prize payout said ‘Set for Life’,” Anne said. “I looked at it at least three times before I called John to show him. The two of us were just jubilant when we saw it.”

Atlantic Lottery’s Set for Life is a $4 Scratch’N Win ticket that offers two options for the top prize. Winners can choose to receive $1,000 a week for 25 years, or a lump sum payment of $675,000. The Bartletts will receive the lump sum payment.

When John called his daughter to share the news, she did not believe him.

“I’m a bit of a prankster when it comes to my children, but I thought I finally convinced her that we had won,” John said. “We hung up the phone and then five minutes later she called me back and said, ‘Are you playing with me?’”

Thanks to their big win, John intends to join Anne in retirement. The couple said they will also pay off some bills, purchase a new vehicle and take a trip to Ireland or Scotland, maybe even both.

The couple are the third Set for Life winners from Newfoundland and Labrador in just over a month, following Marcie and Paul Bromley of Long Island and Karen Patey and Terrance Simms of Raleigh.

The Bartletts' daughter purchased the winning Set for Life ticket at Valley Convenience Plus in St. John’s, N.L. The seller will receive a one per cent seller’s prize.
