MONCTON (N.B.) – Roger Clarke of Oakland, N.B. rarely plays Lotto Max, purchasing a ticket once or twice a year when the jackpot is high. With the prospect of a$70-million jackpot on the Oct. 21 Lotto Max draw, Clarke purchased a ticket that ended up being a Maxmillions winner worth $1 million.

“I couldn’t believe it when I saw it. I scanned it with my phone and it said it was a big winner so I thought maybe $10,000 or something,” Clarke said. “That’s when I went to the store and they printed it out and it said I won $1 million.”

Maxmillions are additional $1-million prizes that are drawn when the Lotto Max jackpot reaches $50 million. Clarke also won $3 on the add-on game TAG on the same ticket, making his total prize $1,000,003.

“I told my brother and my nephew that I won $1,000, then I said, ‘Well, maybe add a couple of zeros on to that,’” Clarke said. “So, they asked ‘$100,000?’ and I said, ‘Well, maybe a little bit more.’”

Clarke intends to purchase a new home with more space for himself, his mother, brother and two nephews who all live together. He intends on keeping his current vehicle, but paying it off in full. He is also looking forward to purchasing a ride-on lawn mower and taking some trips with his family, with getaways to Cuba and New England already planned.

Clarke has no plans to stop working any time soon, but says his big win will make life a lot easier.

“It’s going to be nice to be less stressed and just be more comfortable,” Clarke said.
“We don’t need to worry about bills or anything anymore.”

Clarke purchased his winning Lotto Max ticket at the Canadian Tire Gas Bar after filling up at the pumps in Woodstock, N.B. The retailer will receive a one per cent seller’s prize.
