CHARLOTTETOWN (P.E.I.) – Marlene Ramsay of Dunstaffnage, P.E.I. is a regular Daily Grand player, typically purchasing a ticket every week. Her persistence paid off big following the Oct. 20 Daily Grand draw, when she took home the game’s second prize of $500,000.
Ramsay purchases her tickets on alc.ca and her husband usually checks the email account where they are notified of any potential wins.
“My husband texted me that day and said, ‘Check your tickets.’ Then, not one minute later, he called and said, ‘Check your tickets,’ again” Ramsay said. “I said, ‘I don’t see anything, there’s nothing here,’ and he said ’Well, it says we won something so you’d better look a little harder!’”
Ramsay could hardly believe her eyes when she finally found the notification in the Message Centre on her alc.ca account.
“Well, there was a ‘five’ and then there was an awful lot of zeros after that,” Ramsay said. “I thought, ‘This just can’t be real.’”
Daily Grand is a national draw game that offers two options for the second prize. Winners can choose to receive $25,000 a year for life or a lump sum of $500,000. Ramsay opted to receive the lump sum payment.
Ramsay has worked in finance for more than 30 years, and while she said they don’t plan to retire right away, this win means that retirement will happen sooner than expected for her and her husband. They also intend on using their prize money to purchase a new vehicle, pay off some bills and help out their two sons.
“One of our sons just recently bought a home and the other just moved out into an apartment less than a year ago,” Ramsay said. “It’s nice to be able to offer them a little bit to help them move ahead.”
