ST. JOHN’S (N.L.) – A regular lottery player, Gerard Murphy of Salmon Cove, N.L. always purchases his tickets on alc.ca and is used to getting email notifications of any wins.

That’s exactly why the email he received following the Oct. 21 Lotto Max draw had him raise his eyebrows.

“I got an email saying that I had won, but normally the email says, “Free Ticket” or “$20,” Murphy said. “This time, though, it said I had to log on to my account to see the prize amount.”

Murphy could hardly believe it when he checked his alc.ca account and learned he was the winner of a Maxmillions prize. Maxmillions are additional $1-million prizes that are drawn when the Lotto Max jackpot reaches $50 million.

“I was outside and I opened up the kitchen door and yelled at my wife, ‘Come out here, I got something to show you,’” Murphy said. “She came out and asked what was wrong, so I showed her the screen on my phone and she told me someone was just pulling my leg.”

Plans for Murphy’s winnings include purchasing a new, more spacious home and a new pickup truck.

“Before I won, I always said ‘I don’t have everything I want, but I have everything I need,” Gerard said. “I’m grateful for what I have, but I’ve got two old pickup trucks that could break down anytime and a very old house. So I always dreamed of having a nice little house, now that I’m getting older, where I don’t have to climb the stairs to go to bed.”

Murphy works as a cook at a children’s summer camp alongside his wife, Wanda. They love working at the camp with the children and have no plans to stop anytime soon.

“I’m so grateful that it happened and now Wanda and I will be comfortable,” Murphy said. “We are both getting up there but we’ll be able to be comfortable from here on out.”
