ST. JOHN’S (N.L.) – It was the day after Betty Quinton’s 65th  birthday when she went for groceries and realized there was $16 cash in her pocket. The Clarenville, N.L. woman hadn’t purchased a lottery ticket in some time and decided to get four Set for Life tickets as a birthday gift to herself.

“I was sitting having a cup of coffee and after two days of my tickets sitting on the table, I thought I should finally scratch them,” Quinton said. “I wanted to see if I could win us a little something on Set for Life.”

As it turned out, Quinton’s present to herself was a big one, as one of her Set for Life tickets was a top-prize winner worth $675,000.

Atlantic Lottery’s Set for Life is a $4 Scratch’N Win ticket that offers two options for the top prize. Winners can choose to receive $1,000 a week for 25 years, or a lump sum payment of $675,000. Quinton will receive the lump sum payment.

“I took the ticket to the store and showed the girl who worked there,” Quinton said. “I couldn’t trust my eyes, so I whispered to her, ‘Can you check this ticket for me? Tell me I’m not crazy, that that says I’m Set for Life.’”

Once the cashier confirmed that Quinton was in fact a Set for Life top-prize winner, the two shared an emotional moment together in the store before officially verifying the ticket and calling to inform Atlantic Lottery of the big win.

Quinton plans to use her money to pay off her mortgage and any other remaining bills. She is going to purchase a new vehicle for herself and help her children and grandchildren as well. Quinton says she will invest the remaining prize money from her Set for Life win.

“I think that this is amazing that Set for Life is only available in the Atlantic provinces,” Quinton said. “We’re such a small area, the four provinces together, it’s nice that we have our own lottery games here that give us such a good chance.”

Quinton purchased her winning Set for Life ticket at Cormack Mini-Mart in Shoal Harbour, N.L. The seller will receive a one per cent seller’s prize.
