HALIFAX (N.S.) – When Cory Callaghan of Glace Bay, N.S. checked the winning numbers on the Atlantic Lottery mobile app and realized he had won a $1-million Maxmillions prize on the May 28, 2024 Lotto Max draw, there was only one idea that came into his mind.
“I’m going to be rich,” he said. “It was pretty shocking. I just sat there for a while and I think I put it through the machine a couple of times just to make sure.”
His father was the first person he told about the win, waking him up at 6:30 a.m. to share the exciting news, which was fitting since Callaghan began playing Lotto Max because of him in the first place.
“My father always played it, so as ever since I became 19 I’ve always played it,” he said. “I buy tickets all the time, but never thought about winning.”
Even after keeping his ticket in a safe for a week before coming into Atlantic Lottery to claim his prize, Callaghan said being a millionaire hadn’t really sunk in yet.
“As of right now, it’s still the exact same. Once you actually see it for yourself, I think that’s when it will come,” he said, adding that his parents might be more emotional about his giant cheque than him. “They might cry, but I won’t.”
Lotto Max draws take place every Tuesday and Friday. Jackpots start at $10 million and grow up to $70 million or until won. Maxmillions are additional $1-million prizes that are drawn when the Lotto Max jackpot reaches $50 million.
Nowehere near retirement age, Callaghan said he doesn’t have any big plans for his winnings just yet. Although he said he will buy a new vehicle, he didn’t have a particular model in mind.
“That’ll be the first thing that I get. I think I’m going to go look around and see what catches my eye.”
Callaghan also said he has no plans to stop buying tickets for the game he and his father have both enjoyed playing.
“I still buy them. I’ve bought them since I won,” he said.
The winning Lotto Max ticket was purchased at Jack’s Place in Glace Bay, N.S. The retailer will receive a one per cent seller’s prize.
