MONCTON (N.B.) – A day out with his son turned into a big lottery win when Clifford Lavigne of Moncton, N.B. uncovered a Set for Life top prize of $675,000.

Lavigne, a former teacher who is now retired after 30 years in the classroom, was in Fredericton for a visit with his adult son. Although he is a regular Lotto Max and Lotto 6/49 player, Lavigne only buys Scratch’N Win tickets “once in a blue moon,” but said he was glad he picked up a Set for Life ticket when when he and his son went shopping downtown that day.

“We usually go to a comic book store because my son likes comics, and then after that we went to that drug store,” where he decided to buy the Set for Life ticket. “Then we went to a burger place, my son and I, and I scratched the ticket there. When I looked at it I knew I’d won something.”

Atlantic Lottery’s Set for Life is a $4 Scratch’N Win ticket that offers two options for the top prize. Winners can choose to receive $1,000 a week for 25 years, or a lump sum payment of $675,000. Lavigne will receive the lump sum payment.

In disbelief, Lavaigne said he waited until he got back to Moncton before validating his ticket.

“I didn’t really want to get it verified because I wanted to have a clear mind for the drive home. I didn’t want to get too excited,” he said. “It feels fantastic and I’m certainly glad I won. I’ve never won something this large and I really appreciate it.”

He said he doesn’t yet have any specific plans for the prize, but added it would help to provide added security for him, his wife, and their children and grandchildren.

“There might be things in the future that we might end up getting, but right now we’re just going to let it stay there in the bank. Then we’re going to make a decision gradually on what we’ll end up getting.”

The winning Set for Life ticket was purchased at Guardian Drugs in Fredericton, N.B. The retailer will receive a one per cent seller’s prize.
