HALIFAX (N.S.) – Deborah and Amedee Larade of Cheticamp, N.S. are $1-million richer after taking home the Gold Ball draw prize from the March 1, 2025 Lotto 6/49 draw thanks to a free ticket.

“We had a free ticket we had won on the last draw that I checked, and as soon as I scanned it, the screen went white and said it was a major prize winner,” Amedee said. “When I saw the screen, my heart started pounding.”

Lotto 6/49 draws take place every Wednesday and Saturday with two multi-million jackpots available to be won. The classic jackpot is always set at $5 million and the Gold Ball jackpot starts at $10 million and can grow past $60 million. The Gold Ball draw guarantees a winning ticket on every draw, with the winner taking home $1 million if a white ball is drawn or the growing Gold Ball jackpot when a gold ball is drawn. A white ball was drawn on March 1, 2025 leading to the Larade’s $1-million win.

Eager to share the exciting news with his wife, Amedee rushed home and asked Deborah to sit down.

“I could hear his voice quivering, so I asked him if I should call 911,” Deborah said. “He said ‘No, this is good news!’”

The couple said that while they don’t intend to retire immediately, their big win will most likely move their retirement plans up. The couple has no major plans for their prize money but said it will provide them with financial freedom moving forward.

“This gives us the option to do different things if we choose to,” Deborah said. “We’re very easy-going, but if we want to do renovations or take a trip, we’ll have the financial backup to do it.”

The Larades purchased their winning ticket at the H. Cormier Petro-Canada in Cheticamp, N.S. The retailer will receive a one per cent seller’s prize.

“Right now, I’m still in a dream,” Amedee said. “I feel like somebody’s going to come tap me on the shoulder and say, ‘Wake up, you’re just dreaming.’”
