MONCTON (N.B.) – Doing a good deed for a family member turned into a surprise windfall for Robert Roche of Glenfanning, P.E.I. when he won $1.5 million playing Super Set for Life.
“It was kind of a normal day for me. I decided to go up east to see my aunt. There was supposed to be a snowstorm coming and I wanted to make sure she had wood up from the basement, so I went up there to help her out,” he said. “When I left, I stopped at the store and I purchased a couple of Super Set for Life tickets. One of them was the big win.”
Roche said he scanned the ticket right away and the retailer told him he had won a major prize.
“It was pretty nice to see that. When it went through the machine and it showed what prize I won, I went out the truck and I shook a little bit,” he said. “From there, I just kind of shoved the ticket in my pocket and I’ve had it in my pocket ever since.”
Atlantic Lottery’s Super Set for Life is a $20 Scratch’N Win ticket that offers two options for the top prize. Winners can choose to receive $100,000 a year for 20 years, or a lump sum of $1.5 million. Roche will receive the lump sum payment.
Roche said the winnings will go towards a new house for himself, a car for his daughter and maybe taking a road trip to explore the Cabot Trail. He also enjoys fixing up other people’s cars and is looking forward to working in his new home’s garage from now on, rather than out in the cold.
“I’m going to be warm while I do it, there’s going to be no more working outside,” he said.
Although he bought the ticket shortly after his 64th birthday, Roche said he has no plans to retire.
“I have to pass my time somehow. If I’m sitting around doing nothing, it’s not me,” he said. “I don’t think it’s going to change my life too much. I think I’m just going to be my regular old self and do what I do. I will be going back to work and try to enjoy myself.”
The winning Super Set for Life ticket was purchased at Elliott’s General Store in Souris, P.E.I. The retailer will receive a one per cent seller’s prize.
