MONCTON (N.B.) – Ashley Orr of Debec, N.B. is a regular lottery player whose morning routine revolves around a visit to the local store and a Set for Life Scratch’N Win ticket.

“I like the game,” Orr said, adding it’s the only lottery game he plays. “In the mornings I’ll go out for my coffee at the store and sit out and scratch my ticket.”

Usually it’s a chance for him to chat with friends and neighbours from around the community, but one day recently he was running late and all of the regulars had already left, meaning nobody else was around when he sat down with his ticket and uncovered a big surprise.

“Sure enough when I scratched it, it said ‘Set for Life’ and I knew right then,” he said. “I knew exactly what it was when I scratched it, but I had to wait to show to someone else to verify it because I couldn’t believe it.”

“I was sitting there shaking. It’s still pretty hard to process.”

The top prize for Atlantic Lottery’s Set for Life Scratch’N Win ticket is one of two options; $1,000 a week for 25 years, or a lump sum payment of $675,000. Orr opted to take the lump sum payment.

A school custodian for 20 years, Orr was already thinking about possible retirement, but said the win has made that goal more realistic. Nonetheless, he said he’ll take some time before he makes a decision one way or the other.

Orr said he doesn’t have any big plans for the winnings except for a new tractor to clear the snow from the driveway during the winter.

Aside from the tractor, he and his partner Jocelyn Graham hope to travel to British Columbia to visit her son, where Orr also hopes to take in some local wildlife.

“I’d like to go see the orcas. I always wanted to go see them and I’ve always been interested in nature,” he said.

“There’s nothing else really. I was happy before and this just puts the icing on the cake.”

The winning Set for Life ticket was purchased at the Debec General Store in Debec, N.B. The retailer will receive a one per cent seller’s prize.
